Obama Advisor's Disturbing Affiliations in India

Published on November 11, 2008 - 12:35am by Vinod K. Jose

The economist of Indian origin on President-elect Barack Obama's transition team, Ms. Sonal Shah, has one dubious credential on her resume--her relationship with the Hindu extremist group, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). This militant group was held responsible for the genocidal pogroms against Muslims in the western Indian state of Gujarat in 2002 that killed 2,000 people and rendered 100,000 homeless. Ms. Shah was the "National Coordinator" for the VHP in North America . So the lingering question is: why hasn't the Obama team vetted enough on Ms. Sonal Shah's Hindu extremist connections?

Beyond those affiliations, Ms. Shah's resume reads well. At 40, she works in Google's global development team and promotes philanthropy. She served as Vice President for Goldman Sachs, in its environmental protection department. She also worked at the Department of Treasury. It is Ms. Shah's "charity" works that throws up some disturbing questions.

The non-profit organization she founded, Indiacorps, sends Americans of Indian origin to work on development projects in India. While Indiacorps is associated with many secular organizations, it also has Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation, the educational wing of VHP as a project partner. This is an organization that has not only misused funds but also diverted the grants to "create disharmony amongst religious groups and formed political cadres [with the aid money]," says a federal enquiry report. The government subsequently stopped all grants to Ekal Vidyalaya in 2005.

In North America, Shah coordinated one of the major fund-raising campaigns for VHP in 2001, to help the earthquake victims of Gujarat. However, serious allegations were raised concerning how dollars raised in America were used on the ground. In Gujarat, less than a year later, there were mass killing of Muslims by the VHP men.

Not only was this money used to fund hate against Muslims, Christians and members from the lower caste communities, but it also violated tax laws.

In the context of an Indian television exposé on the involvement of "spiritual gurus" in money-laundering, former income tax commissioner Mr. Vishwabahndhu Gupta implicated Shah's VHP as a "religious mafia" who "floats bogus trusts" and violated tax regulations . Mr Gupta said his department has evidence of how foreign money was misused by VHP's youth wing, Bajrang Dal, in Gujarat.

In the last two months, Bajrang Dal was in the news again from the East Indian state of Orissa, where dozens of Christians were killed, 1400 houses and 80 churches burned, nuns raped and thousands pushed into refugee camps. The Orissa government, supported by the Hindu right wing parties, did very little to stop the violence against the Christians.

So this is the question to Obama from the quarters of his liberal, democratic constituency: howsoever much professionally qualified Ms. Shah might be, can she ever be an advisor in an administration of "change" when she has neither rectified her past relationships nor denounced any possible ongoing affiliations with the militant Hindu extremists?

On the contrary, newspapers in Shah's state, Gujarat, are speculating on how her proximity with Obama can help the man behind the 2002 killings rebuild his image internationally . The Chief Minister of Gujarat and the poster-boy of the extremists, Narendra Modi, was denied visa to the US in 2005 for his genocidal programs against Muslims. The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom and dozens of lawmakers had campaigned successfully with the State Department to bring Mr. Modi in strict accordance with the Immigration and Naturalization Act, including Section 212 (a) (2) (G) which denies access to "any alien who, while serving as a foreign government official, was responsible for or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom." Every year, Mr Modi gets an invitation from the Gujarati community in the US, including from Ms. Shah's father, Ramesh Shah, Vice President of the Overseas Friends of the Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP). But the führer is yet to make it across the Atlantic.

Unlike what Gujarati newspapers seem to imply, it could be a long shot for Ms. Sonal Shah to get visa for a man accused of genocidal crimes. She is on the Obama advisory board to do something else: probably, to help him with the economy.

Change.gov doesn’t need someone affiliated to VHP Inc . That is not "diversity-representation." Remember, this is an administration that is watched closely not just in the US, but all over the world.

Politics just keeps getting
Politics just keeps getting dirtier and dirtier, especially in Illinois. Bad morals will eventually catch up with you. It was payday for Rod Blagojevich who along with his chief of staff John Harris was arrested Tuesday morning on several charges by the FBI. I was shocked to hear that Governor Rod Blagojevich had been arrested as this is the second time in a row that an Illinois governor has been arrested on federal charges. The governor who preceded him was George Ryan who was indicted on federal charges as well. Blagojevich was apparently trying to sell the senate seat being vacated by president elect Barack Obama who resigned from the senate after he won the November 4th election. Apparently, according to Illinois state law, it is the governor's job to fill the seat and governor Blagojevich saw the opportunity to use his power to leverage some additional amenities for himself. According to the news, Blagojevich was hoping to get a substantially higher salary, a position on the board for his wife, a cabinet post and more in exchange for his choice of a senate replacement. Looks like the governor got a little greedy. The FBI apparently has been on to him for awhile as they filed a seventy six page indictment against both Blagojevich and Harris. It was reported that a court ordered wire tap got him on tape last month. The Residents of Illinois will have to wait patiently for the outcome as the governor professed that everything he has said, both in public and in private, has always been lawful. Hopes are high but times look tough for both Blagojevich and his cohort John Harris as they might not get to see their next payday in office. SONAL DISTRIBUTES SWEETS FOR GUJARAT GENOCIDE SUCCESS
I BELIEVE SONAL SHAH IS EVIL AS IT IS REPORTED THAT SHE AND HER FAMILY DISTRIBUTED SWEETS AT THE TEMPLE TO CELEBRATE THE VICTORY OF THE GUJARAT GENOCIDE OF 2002. NOW SHE WILL DO THAT TO CELEBRATE THE KILLINGS OF CHRISTIANS BY HER ASSOCIATES IN INDIA. JUST HOPE OBAMA GETS SOME GOOD SENSE.
CSFH statement on Sonal Shah
A virtual melee has ensued in print and digital media over the selection of Ms. Sonal Shah, an American of Indian origin to the Obama transition team’s advisory board. Shrill accusations of Ms. Shah being a “racist and Hindu chauvinist” are being reciprocated by equally shrill attempts to portray anyone who raises serious questions about the selection as being anti-India, anti-Hindu, anti-progress, and recently, as against “liberal civility.” We condemn such baseless and unfair statements. At the outset we wish to acknowledge that Ms. Shah has had a record of being a visible and an important face of the “desi American” community - a successful professional, and a politically and socially engaged citizen. interesting..
Interesting article. Looks like religious affiliations matter only for Muslims. "Of course if a person was from a Muslim family deeply involved with some extremist Islamic entity, that would immediately kill the nomination/advisory role, no questions asked (remember Obama’s short-lived “Muslim adviser“?). But at the same time, we cannot employ the same techniques used for Muslim exclusion, to push for the exclusion of others. What’s wrong for us is wrong for others. Guilt by association is not acceptable to indict someone". Biased
This is in response to Dhruv and other BHP affiliates who are insulted by this article. Personally, Sonal Shah may be a moderate; but her affiliations and more importantly, her actions (e.g. diverting money to Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation) tells a different story. Although BJP is a right-wing political party (and one of the largest in India), this article is not about BJP; it is about BHP, RSS, and Bajrang Dal: the ultra right-wing fundamentalist Hindu organizations who want to create a Hindu nation in India just as Talebans in Afghanistan. In their eyes, Muslims, Christians and others are foreigners, invaders, and unwanted. Any organization has some good things to show, but that does not make it acceptable to all. And please refrain from using generalizations like "Not nearly as extremist as say Southern Baptists or almost ANY Muslim organization". It's like saying "we are better than you". In this day and age, when we all are against any religious party that promotes to create a state based on a particular religion, BJP, RSS, and Bajrang Dal should not be any exception.
why haven't u posted this to the huffington post?
just wondering? As ur a contributor there.
VHP is the ruthless face of Apartheid in India
Eating beef in India is a crime? You would not be allowed entry into your brahmin neighbours house. Try renting a house in any of the cities of India and do not feel bad that they do not rent you one because you eat meat or fish. You need not tell anything about eating beef. Then you are a paraih (the word the dalits of India are called by). Do not be surprised by the kind of pro-VHP sympathisers who responds to this article either. A lot of those who have made to the shores of the US wear a stupid thread across their chest to prove the superiority of their race. (I can see a huge hue and cry about insulting their pious religion. This an attack on apartheid not a religion. Most of what goes in the name of Hinduism is actually a facade to perpetuate this apartheid.) The Dalits, the broken people, who form a more than 25% of the population of the country could have not even heard of 'The US' itself. Many of them would have never seen a computer or can speak the language that is not considered funny by the 8% of the brahmin population who has been systematically printing their codes of apartheid into every avenues of culture. Of late the brahmin expatriates in the US has been funding these projects through VHP and its other educational, social and cultural organisations. Imagine the tribal wing of RSS asking the beef eating tribes of Chattisgarh to give up beef because cow is their mother. Sorry to say this, their mothers are treated no better than cattle, given the status of women in India. Anybody who does not know much about the Brahmin India should know that only 'thread' that a brahmin wears is a masculine inhertance. Women, like dalits, are not even allowed to read their religious writings. After the failed attempt to 'reform' these systems by the British, which resulted in the 1857 revolts, even the British realised the convenience of sustaining the Caste order of Apartheid in India. Any one else, including the neo-coloniser -the US- would not question this. Now, why were the Christians targeted. The question could be answered, if you answer why was Gandhi (The man who upheld all Brahmin practices, including vegetarianism) killed by RSS. He asked for peace, but more importantly, he made the fatal mistake of 'empowering' the dalits in his own partonising ways. Some of the biographers of Gandhi have even spoken about this openly. Why do people convert in India? Not because they were threatened by the military or the police; no christian leader in India can do. (This is possible for any BJP/VHP leader though as Modi in Gujrat has proved it and something the BJP Govt in states of Karnataka is trying to prove.). Because they see a promise of shedding their centuries old institutionalized apartheid. I would like to be 'reconverted' to be a Hindu. If they let me become a Brahmin, not to be called an untouchable. Open and overt discrimination happens almost everywhere in India. Can you imagine any so called secular nation pass rules to ban conversion? A dalit to choose his own religion, (a fundamental right) has to get the approval from a magistrate (in all possibility another Brahmin or an upper caste man). Even if he/she manages that, the Brahmin VHP would get you, lynch you, slit your pregnant wife's belly and roast your unborn baby over a fire as they did in Gujrat. Thank god, (definitely not the Brahmin God) that we have someone like Vinod to have some voice heard. The
Obama's team should have verified Sonal Shah's credentials
In view of the 2002 gujarat genocide and ongoing violence in state of Orissa against Christians in India Obama's team should have taken initiative to verify credentials of Sonal Shah. It is now verified by news media and other sources that she and her family has long time association with with RSS, Bajrang Dal and VHP. All the 3 organizations have been associated with violence against minorites in India. Having someone associated with organizations propagating hate and violence against minority in the power circle of US administration is frightening.
Thank you
Dear Mr. Jose:

Thank you for this article. I am sorry for any hatemail you may be receiving now and encourage you to stay on this story, as the Obama team will be engaged with Indian Americans and other U.S. citizens and residents of South Asian heritage, and will be dealing with the politics of South Asia extensively in the future-- so some education as to Hindutva and the Sangh Parivar, and the Sangh's overseas chapters in the U.S., is in order.

For the readers that aren't so familiar with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of India, I encourage people to read up on their violations of human rights, including large scale killing and sexual violence against cultural and religious minorities (especially Muslims and Christians), from the US State Department's Commission on International Religious Freedom:

Obama Advisor's Disturbing Affiliations in India
"Change.gov doesn’t need someone affiliated to VHP Inc . That is not "diversity-representation." Remember, this is an administration that is watched closely not just in the US, but all over the world" I think this says it all. It's really a timely reminder to Obama, as he is yet to begin his term. Let's hope he can find a better substitute for Ms. Sonal Shah. Regards Abhiyya
You know nothing man why
You know nothing man why Christians were killed? just for fun is it? why 2002 hapened just hindus wanted to kill what a artical.
Sonal Shah and Family are great people
A number of Indian Americans have had affiliations with VHP. I have had also. I am from Houston too. Unlike Christian Church youth camps, there are few options for children belonging to Hindu families to connect, learn, and celebrate their culture, heritage and religious traditions. VHP is one of the few organizations that has this. The VHP is so large, also, that it has everyone (mostly) moderate thinking people with some on the outer fringe as being more fundamental. Extremist? Not nearly as extremist as say Southern Baptists or almost ANY Muslim organization. And to the writer of this article, correct your facts. VHP absolutely cannot be held wholly responsible for the riots following the massacre of Hindu priests by Muslims in the Indian state of Gujurat. Communal tensions, state government, and other reasons are there as well. I think the local people just had enough at that time. There is a breaking point for people of all faiths, and unfortunately that was it for the Hindus of that community. Pacifica Radio: I have much respect and donate money to your organization. But to be affiliated with the writer of this article, in any capacity, draws serious doubts to the credibility of your organization. I would consider removing all associations with this "Vinod Jose."
Totally biased article with hidden agenda..
VHP is militant group? Then why US is giving visa to so many member of that group? Get your facts correct. It seems author is interested in only forwarding his anti-India agenda. According to author, then biggest potical party in biggest democracy India (BJP) should be banned too because they too are very much linked with VHP. I hope other reader knows that author have other vested interest while writing this article.
Extrimism of any form isnt
Extrimism of any form isnt good but by taking isolated incidents we cant really term such a big organization as a terrorist organization then what are jews doing in Israel they do the very same thing VHP does god dont dare them to call terrorist who is terrorist and who isnt is a big confusion which you need to clear for yourself
